I'm an entrepreneur who's looking for a soul mate. If you’ve read Art of the Start, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If not, go read that book before reading the rest of this listing.
A few months ago I left my well paying job with a nice office at one of the world’s top software companies to pursue my dream if starting my own company… and I’m looking to bring someone on at the partnership level. If you're super-smart, experienced, a rock-star developer, passionate about technology, young, hungry, looking for something more than what you have now and seeking new challenges as partner of a hot new startup, read on...
Due to the nature of what I’m doing, I’m not going to go into too many details about the company in this posting. Let’s just say it’s a very interesting project in the Web 2.0 / SaaS / social networking space based in Seattle. Of course, there are lots of companies in that space these days, all trying to replicate the success of YouTube, MySpace, Facebook et al. Some of these companies will be successful, many will not.
I’ve identified what I believe to be some of the key success factors of many of the most successful pieces of social-oriented software over the past 15 years. Whilst bubbles come and go (so will this one we are in at the moment btw), I think there are some key fundamentals that do not change. I have an idea to execute on now which is part of a much broader, longer term vision for something that could be really huge.
Now, a bit about me:
- I spent the last 7+ years at one of the world’s leading software companies. The most recent 5 of those years was as an architect working with some of the world’s largest companies, helping them architect high-profile mission-critical solutions using the Microsoft platform. I’ve seen a lot of different companies and a lot of different problems, so I’m nice and broad in lots of areas of technology and can go deep when I need to. The 2 years before that were spend in the product teams.
- Prior to that I spent several years as a consultant/developer working for startup companies in the Systems Integration space, focusing mainly on Telcos
- I have a very strong technical background, mixed with a flair for business and strategic thinking. I love technology, but I’m not interested in spending all of my time down in the details. Whilst I can probably code pretty much anything I want to, developing the system isn’t my true passion. I know there are people out there who are much stronger developers than I and can help implement my vision faster and better than I could.
And about you / what I’m looking for:
- Development Guru: you’re an experienced development guru – you can build anything you want in record time. Your primary skills are in: .NET, C#, ASP.NET, AJAX, JavaScript, SQL Server, Windows. However, you also understand a variety of other platforms and technologies including: *NIX, RoR, Java, PHP etc… You understand software development, you know what methodologies and techniques work, what don’t and why
- Experienced: you’ve been around the block a couple of times. You’ve built and deployed large scale distributed web systems. You understand the entire stack from the application architecture all the way down to the infrastructure architecture.
- Capable of being the CTO: initially, this role will be about leading the development efforts. Longer term, it will evolve to running the dev team, and eventually leading the technical direction of the company. You need to have the capability of becoming the CTO of a major technology organization. Your true passion is technology, you love being in the weeds and you’re good at it. You can also look at the bigger picture, understand industry direction, understand which tools, technologies and frameworks to use when and why.
- Financially secure: you're at a point in your life where you’re financially secure, ready to take on a position that is purely equity based (at least until we start making money). You have enough finances to support yourself for 12+ months without salary.
- Willing to live the startup lifestyle: you’re ready, willing and able to work the kind of hours needed to succeed in a startup
- Hungry: you’re hungry, you want more than what you currently have. Perhaps you’re bored with your current job and looking for a new challenge. Or maybe you’ve come to the realization that your current job will never give you the kinds of challenges or rewards that you want. Perhaps you just want to be an integral part of something, something where you are more than just a very small cog in a very big machine, instead, somewhere where you can make a true impact.
- A good fit: this one is hard to describe, but probably the single most important aspect. You and I need to be a good fit. I’m smart, have a strong personality and a strong vision but at the same time open to new ideas. If you can show me a better way of doing things, I’m all about it. I often think I’m right (and a lot of the time I am :), but I’m happy to admit when I’m wrong. I hate incompetence and I’m only interested in working with the best of the best. Have you ever heard Steve Jobs’ saying: “As hire As and Bs hire Cs”. I’m and A, and I’m looking to hire a crack team of gurus. I want people smarter than I am, and the more of them the merrier. Bs and Cs have no place in my organization. You need to get along well with someone like me: you need to be easy to work with, able to take direction, able to debate technology decisions passionately yet able to jump on board once we make the decision which way to go.
If this sounds like you, respond to this posting letting me know why we should talk further…
